Well honestly it doesn't look as bad as you think. I will agree that if you were going for realistic it would've been horrible. But from a non-realistic standpoint I can tell that it's a human and that it's in a fighting pose.
However from a non-realistic standpoint I would have no idea on how to make people think it's an earth bender. The eyes are well shaded btw.
